In 1995, Congress chose to get rid of the 1974 law setting 55 as the maximum speed limit in the United States. Since then, all states have chosen to increase speed limits to more than 55. In Texas, major highways and Interstates typically have a speed limit between 65-75. A new study has concluded that more than twelve thousand (12,000) fatalities between 1995 and 2005 were attributable to increases in speed limits across the United States.
