NHTSA is set to revisit the roof strength standard that was established in 1973. The current standard requires a car’s roof to be strong enough to withstand 1.5 times the vehicle’s weight. The strength of a roof is important in
protecting an occupant in foreseeable rollover events. NHTSA’s current proposal is to raise roof strength to 2.5 times the vehicle’s weight.
Consumers Union does not believe that 2.5 is enough.
