Recently, in the central Texas area, there have been a number of rollovers reported. Many of these resulted in tragic injuries or deaths. Below is a list of some of the more recent rollovers around the nation. As these posts are intended to illustrates, rollovers are still happening at a high frequency and often leading to serious personal injuries and sometimes death.

San Antonio, Texas Rollover:

One teenager was killed and three others injured Tuesday morning in a one-vehicle wreck on the Northwest Side, authorities said. Police said James Peterson, 18, was westbound on Loop 1604 at about 3 a.m. when he lost control of his truck and struck a guardrail near Hausman Road. The truck then rolled down an embankment, flipping several times, police said. Peterson was partially ejected from the truck and was crushed by it, an impact that killed him instantly, police said. Two of his three passengers — Caleb Martinez, 17, and Matthew Rodriguez, 16 — were ejected from the truck bed, according to a San Antonio Police Department incident report. A third passenger, 18-year-old Justin Lugo, was not ejected. He was in the truck cab.

King County, Washington Rollover:

A King County sheriff’s deputy responding to a burglary call in White Center was trapped in his cruiser after his car shot off the road and landed on its side down an embankment early Friday.Sheriff’s department spokesman John Urquhart said the officer was on his way to a call in which police had a burglar cornered at 2 a.m. when his car went off Des Moines Memorial Drive at South 104th Street and careened down a 15-foot embankment, trapping him inside. The officer was discovered by another deputy who was responding to the same call and saw the wreckage. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to cut the roof off the police cruiser so they could reach the injured deputy, who was unconscious.

Lubbock County, Texas Rollover:

A 59-year-old Lubbock County resident was killed early this morning when he rolled his vehicle in East Lubbock County. James Fields died in the wreck at about 6 a.m. at CR 3700 and CR 6840, a Texas Department of Public Safety official said. Fields was driving north on CR 3700 when he failed to make a curve, according to DPS. His 1998 Chevrolet 1500 left the roadway and rolled. He was partially ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt. DPS officials were still investigating the wreck and had not determined factors related to the crash.

Midland, Texas Rollover:

A 21-year-old Midland student was killed early Monday morning when he fell asleep at the wheel and rolled his vehicle several times. Todd James Edwards was killed when the accident occurred around 1:58 a.m. on U.S. Highway 87 about 14.6 miles north of Tahoka, said Texas Department of Public Safety officials. Lynn County Justice of the Peace Dana McKay pronounced Edwards dead. DPS officials said the driver was heading north on U.S. 87 in a 2000 Chevy Tahoe when he fell asleep behind the wheel and drove into a ditch. He tried to correct the vehicle and skidded sideways when the vehicle then rolled several times before it stopped in the northbound lane facing west. Monday morning’s road conditions were wet and foggy, said DPS. Officials said Edwards was wearing a seatbelt.

West El Paso, Texas Rollover:

One man was killed in a rollover wreck Monday night on N. Desert Boulevard in West El Paso. Police said the victim was a 28-year-old man. His identity was not released. A woman was in the car with him, police said. She was taken to Thomason Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. “It’s still early in our investigation, but just looking at the evidence and some of the skid marks…The preliminary comments are that speed may be a factor,” El Paso police spokesman Chris Mears said.

This Blog discusses roof strength, roof crush, and rollovers frequently. For example, I have posted previously regarding roof crush here, here, and here. If someone you know was injured or killed as the result of a rollover, immediately contact a competent attorney for advice. It is extremely important to do this quickly.
